Emery sat at the edge of Karis’s bed as she thumbed through her endless wardrobe, Gemini standing feet away, wringing her fingers.

Karis’s room was filled with weapons and art, cosmetics, and fighting armor. A perfect balance of beauty and chaos, and Emery found herself a bit jealous. Her room was still trashed. She would have to clean it eventually, but even at the thought, dread filled her.

“Okay,” Karis nodded, stepping back. “I was thinking violet for Gemini and Persephone, we’ll do silver. I’m going to do cobalt blue.” She pulled out three dresses and walked over, laying them gently on the bed. “Hair and makeup first. Gemini, let’s go.”

Gemini’s wide eyes found Emery’s.

Emery waved her off, gently touching her mask, making sure it was in place. “She’s in a good mood today. Don’t worry.”

“Fashion always makes me happy.” Karis pulled out the chair in front of her vanity. “Come on. Chop chop. We have three faces and not much time.”

Gemini released a breath and straightened up as if she were walking straight into battle. She settled in the chair, her beautiful brown eyes touched with nerves.

Karis fluffed her curly hair. “I love your hair. All of these curls, I’d die for them.”

Gemini’s expression twisted. “Really? They’re such a hassle, and your hair is so beautiful.”

Karis flicked a strand of her golden locks over her shoulder, pride clear. “Thank you.”

Gemini giggled, her shoulders visibly relaxing.

Emery watched as Karis started putting product in Gemini’s hair, defining the curls, twisting them, wrapping them, braiding them. Her hair truly was beautiful.

“Are you sure?” Gemini asked sometime later as Karis pinned her hair up with a beautiful diamond hairpin. She touched it gently, eyes shining. “It’s very beautiful and expensive.”

Karis leaned over, sliding her face next to Gemini’s. “And it fits you perfectly.”

“Karis,” Gemini tried as Karis straightened.

“Don’t. Do you know how long I’ve been waiting to have female friends? I’m the Lady of Elri, women run in fear of me because I’m a shifter, royalty, Kai’s sister.” Karis shrugged as she started on Gemini’s makeup. “It’s good to have a female who doesn’t look at me in envy or hatred or fear.”

“Why would they fear you?”

Karis’s eyes flicked to Emery’s for only a moment before falling back to Gemini’s. “People fear what they can’t understand.”

When it was Emery’s turn, Karis pinned up half her hair in silver pins, letting the rest fall around her shoulders in beautiful, soft waves. Her makeup simple, blacks and silvers.

When she was done with herself, she laid out three masks. Black for Karis, silver for Gemini, and white for Emery, all similar styles to the mask Emery was already wearing.

After what felt like hours of getting ready, and two bottles of wine, most for Emery, they were finally ready.

Gemini’s dress was made of silk, hugging her waist and falling around her in endless waves, showing off her small waist, her beautiful shoulders, and her long neck. It made the long earrings Karis had let her borrow stand out beautifully.
